Background of the Study
Women’s political participation is a critical indicator of democratic inclusivity and societal progress. Despite global advancements in gender equality, women remain underrepresented in political spaces, particularly in Nigeria, where socio-cultural and institutional barriers persist (Abubakar & Usman, 2023). Jos North Local Government Area (LGA) in Plateau State presents a microcosm of this challenge, with limited representation of women in the local council. Efforts to promote gender equity, such as advocacy by civil society groups and legislative initiatives, have yielded mixed results (Olowe et al., 2024). This study examines the state of women’s political participation in Jos North LGA, focusing on the factors that hinder or enhance their representation in the local council.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The underrepresentation of women in Jos North LGA’s local council raises concerns about the inclusivity of the decision-making process. Despite constitutional provisions and advocacy efforts, women face structural and cultural barriers, including gender stereotypes, inadequate political education, and limited financial resources (Omale, 2023). These challenges are compounded by societal norms that discourage women from active political engagement. Addressing these issues requires an in-depth analysis of women’s political participation in Jos North LGA to identify practical solutions for achieving equitable representation.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To analyze the level of women’s political participation in Jos North LGA.
To identify the barriers to women’s representation in the local council.
To evaluate strategies for enhancing women’s political participation in Jos North LGA.

What are the barriers to women’s representation in the local council?
What strategies can enhance women’s political participation in Jos North LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Women’s political participation in Jos North LGA is significantly low.
Cultural and structural barriers hinder women’s representation in the local council.
Implementing targeted strategies can significantly enhance women’s political participation in Jos North LGA.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study contributes to the discourse on gender and politics in Nigeria by providing localized insights into women’s political participation in Jos North LGA. The findings will inform policymakers, activists, and researchers on how to address the barriers limiting women’s representation. Advocacy groups can use the recommendations to push for policy reforms, while scholars can build on the study to explore comparative gender studies in other regions.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to women’s political participation in Jos North LGA, focusing on their representation in the local council.
